How important is Flexibility?

flexibility4You can’t touch your toes.  It seems so innocent and harmless but beware, you might be on your way to a serious injury.  What is flexibility and why do you need it?  Flexibility is being able to move your joints through a full range of motion with your muscle elasticity working in tandem.  If the muscle is not elastic or feels stiff, your joints cannot move the way they are intended to move resulting in an altered range of motion.  Why is that harmful?  Because as you lose your functionality you become less and less able to do everyday tasks without constant and ever present pain.

Consider a person with severe lower back pain.  Even walking becomes a challenge because walking requires your core muscles to stabilize you and with your back being completely inflexible, the core is compromised.  What starts as a little inflexibility like having trouble touching your toes, becomes compounded with years as more and more range of motion is lost.  sciatic painStiff back muscles end up tighting so much around your lumbar bones, compressing the discs which results in pinched nerve pain running down your leg (sciatica). Then as you try to pick something off the floor, you pull your back muscle.  Now you are injured and depending on how bad your situation is, might require surgery.

Most of us do a lot of sitting due to the nature of our jobs which is the reason why close to 80% of people suffer from some sort of back pain.  While we have no control over the nature of our jobs, we can still do a few things to prevent a back injury by adding daily back stretches and cardio workouts.  Important thing to note, however, DO NOT stretch while your muscles are cold.  I personally believe that it is not necessary to do static stretching before a workout at all.

dynamic stretchingDynamic stretching that look more like a mini workout do a much better job at getting our muscles ready for a workout routine.  Also, it’s extremely important to stretch immediately after because the muscle is warm and very conducive to change at that moment.  Then stretch again at night before going to bed.  Make it a daily routine as it is vital to your health.
