Oh no! I’ve got a cold again!

The cold and flu season is upon us and many of us are will be experiencing a slew of uncomfortable and sometimes right down debilitating symptoms. But what if I tell you that it doesn’t have to be that way? You can achieve a level of health that keeps you from this viral assault. Skeptical? Don’t be. The key to keeping colds and flues at bay is a strong immune system. Let’s explore different schools of thought and their results.

The most common way to “treat” a cold is by taking over-the-counter drugs like Dayquil/Nyquil or Theraflu, etc.  There are many on the shelves that claim to help you with the symptoms. I’m sure most of you go that route.  The symptoms don’t actually disappear, they still cause a lot of discomfort but you feel like you are doing something and that’s what matters, right?  As a general rule, the drugs don’t even claim to heal you, just to treat your symptoms (by masking them). I often found that it causes nasty side effects like digestion problems, sleepiness, and just general sickly feeling.

Another path is a natural solution, which is sometimes called alternative medicine.  I honestly don’t like that term because there’s nothing alternative about it.  Natural is medicine! But most people don’t know about it since it’s not like you get bombarded with natural remedies commercials the way conventional drug companies do.  I’m sure you’ve already heard that chicken soup and tea are some of the home remedies.  There are more, many more, that you can try.  Onions, for example are extremely anti-viral, so try adding extra to your food. Oranges have a high amount of vitamin C which also helps fight the cold.  These are just some of the examples.

More importantly, when you get sick, use it as a wake up call to get your immune system stronger so that you don’t get that cold in the first place.  It’s always easier to prevent it than to treat it once you get it.  Make certain foods an every day part of your life.  People think it’s normal to get a few colds every year but that’s not true.  I go for years without a cold even when there are people around me coughing and sneezing.

Avoid drugs as much as possible, use home remedies, and you will be shocked how much stronger your immune system will get over the years.
